Burrowing Owl

Seen in The Salton Sea in southern California

Standing tall beside its burrow mound, this Burrowing Owl fixes the camera with bright lemon-yellow eyes. Burrowing Owls are the long-legged, ground-dwelling owls of open desert and grassland. Around the Salton Sea and the farm country of the Imperial Valley they often nest in the banks of irrigation canals and ditches. They hunt by day as well as by night, which makes them one of the most beloved and recognizable owls in the West. The soft, warm background keeps all the attention on that expressive face.
