Spotted Owl Owlet
Seen in The Chiricahua Mountains of southeast Arizona
A downy young Mexican Spotted Owl balances on a branch, still half fluff, with deep dark eyes looking back at the camera. Mexican Spotted Owls live in shaded canyons and old forests of the Southwest's sky-island mountain ranges. They are a federally threatened subspecies and a true bucket-list bird. Seeing a fledgling like this one is a quiet, unforgettable moment, and the dark green forest behind it makes the soft white down glow.
