Roseate Spoonbill

Seen in Central Florida, near Orlando

Bubblegum-pink wings with a slash of carmine, a bare greenish head and that unmistakable spatula bill: the Roseate Spoonbill is pure color against dark water. Spoonbills feed by sweeping their flat bills side to side through shallow water to catch small fish and shrimp. Their pink comes from pigments in the crustaceans they eat. This tight, vertical portrait turns the bird's shape and color into something close to abstract art.
