Tricolored Heron

Seen in Central Florida, near Orlando

Slate-blue plumage with maroon and lilac plumes, a white belly stripe and long yellow legs, all set against near-black water: this Tricolored Heron portrait feels like it belongs in a gallery. Tricolored Herons are slim, graceful wading birds of Florida's marshes, lakes and coastal wetlands. They are known for dashing, wing-flicking hunts through the shallows. The dark, low-key light here strips the scene down to shape, color and that dagger-sharp bill.
