Violet-crowned Hummingbird

Seen in Sierra Vista, Arizona

Snow-white underparts, a violet-blue cap and a bright coral bill: the Violet-crowned Hummingbird is one of the most elegant hummingbirds in North America, and one of the rarest to see in the U.S. It reaches the country only in a few canyons of southeast Arizona and southwest New Mexico, and the Sierra Vista area is one of the best places to find it. Here it rests on a bare branch against a soft, muted background that lets its clean colors stand out.
